Grade 6
Students walked to Bowness Park in September to take part in a Classroom Sharing Circles to share how we connect to the land. Student appreciation of the land and the perspectives of their peers support the sense of belonging and interconnectedness in our Grade 6 cohort.
Grade 5
Students have enjoyed getting to know each other, building our sense of community and developing our ROARS values. Students in grade 5 also had the opportunity to go on a beautiful walk down to Bowness Park in order to consolidate their understanding of a kilometer.
Grade 4
The month of September was spent building our classroom community and learning about the importance of a positive growth mindset. Students read various quotes and selected one that resonated with them personally and that they could easily connect with. They then created a visual representation of what their quote meant to them.
Grade 3
It has been busy with building routines and reviewing expectations in the classroom. Students are already showcasing their self-portraits and their “Islands” from our mapping unit in Social Studies. In addition, we visited the school garden to practice sketching.
Grade 2
This month we visited the construction site on a walking field trip. We were able to see many large machines: skid steer, excavator, water truck, people at work and so much more. We started a novel study on the book, “Wild Robot” by Peter Brown and have been working on defining new vocabulary, making predictions, making inferences and summarizing chapters.
Grade 1
This month we worked on patterns. We started by working on creating patterns with colour. Just before the open house we worked on creating our very own pattern fish.
Kindergarten
We had a busy start to the school year. We explored the use of lines. A lot of the children had fun making ‘Wiggly lines. There were so many fun art and other experiences had by all the children. We got explore the big gym and some of us went to our first assembly.
Music
September has been a month of name games, getting our singing voices warmed up again, community building activities, and exploring some of the instruments in the music room. The whole school also learned the Children’s Blessing song by Sheryl Sewepagaham, which students sang at our Truth and Reconciliation assembly on September 26. Students also had the opportunity to learn about, and play the Indigenous drums made for our school by Chantal Chagnon.
Room 23
We worked on getting to know one another and start to create our new community for the school year. We also tried some bannock with raisins or just plain pieces to showcase some Indigenous foods.
Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day Assembly
Students came into the main gym and made a circle in the. This year we focused on what the land means to us. There were two students chosen from grade five and two to speak to what the land means to them and when they are the happiest on it. Ms. Gibson gave the land acknowledgement. Ms. Draper led music as described above. Mrs. Taha created a beautiful orange shirt with all the different squares we created with writing and drawing. Land is important to all of us and we are all connected to one another, the land and animals.
The Learning Garden
The learning garden harvest was a great success this year with so many students enjoying taking home a fresh vegetable. We saw some giant carrots of so many different colours, tons of tomatoes, flowers and many other items. None of this would be possible without the huge support from parents on the garden committee and other families throughout the summer months. A big thank you to those families that worked so hard to help us show the children what is possible with some hard work.
